Goldsmiths Mocap Streamer and Alexander Whitley Dance Company

This collaboration between Dr. Dan Strutt of Goldsmiths, University of London and the Alexander Whitley Dance Company (AWDC) will create a tool for remote digital-dance composition, collaboration and creation.

The project builds on an existing partnership between researchers at Goldsmiths and AWDC who have collaborated over several years to develop cutting-edge software tools for motion-captured dance.

• The Goldsmiths Mocap Streamer software enables dancers to come together in a virtual space through motion-capture networking. 

• The AWDC Digital Dance Studio software is a choreographic app that allows 3D composition of dance and movement-based work in a virtual environment.

Currently, each tool requires some level of specialist technical input. This new project will fully integrate the MoCap Streamer software with DDS to create a unique, all-in-one virtual choreographic tool that can receive live inputs of dance sequences from anyone, anywhere in the world. 

The collaboration brings together two sets of goals from the partners’ respective R&D frameworks to create a shared solution with potentially wide-reaching impact within the creative industries. 

The project is one of seven initiatives supported by the XR Network+ Prototyping, Impact and Acceleration (PIA) funding call, with grants of up to £10,000 awarded to researchers at UK universities to develop new ideas and complete existing research related to VP.
